Research conducted by universities advances discovery, innovation, and creation. Indeed, university research creates knowledge that can lead to new technologies, commercial products, and the development of industries that can have a significant impact on the economy. Moreover, research is part of a university’s mission of learning and discovery, but university research can be expensive, especially in laboratory-intensive fields. The Ontario Research Fund helps eligible institutions cover the costs of research infrastructure.
The program is divided into three funds, which include:
The Large Infrastructure Fund
The Large Infrastructure Fund (LIF) program helps institutions build on their research strengths by investing in facilities that bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines, technology experts, and industry partners to generate new ideas, stimulate technology development, and support the growth of strong regional economies. This fund helps cover the costs of building/renovating and equipping facilities to conduct collaborative academic research.
The program is co-funded with the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s Innovation Fund.
The next application date is July 18, 2022.
The Small Infrastructure Fund
The Ontario Research Fund – Small Infrastructure Fund helps bring together, retain, and develop top researchers at Ontario’s publicly funded research institutions through the acquisition and upgrade of leading-edge technologies and equipment. This fund helps cover the costs of acquiring or renewing research equipment.
It is co-funded with the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Opportunity Fund.
The next application dates for this year are June 3 and November 4, 2022.
Example of eligible costs:
- Scientific collections
- Computer software
- Information databases
The Ontario Research Fund College-Industry Innovation Fund (ORF-CIIF) program augments the ability of Ontario’s colleges of applied arts and technology to support business innovation in Ontario and Canada by providing them with leading-edge, industry-relevant research infrastructure to foster partnerships with the private sector in a specific area of institutional strategic priority. This fund helps cover the costs of building, renovating and equipping research facilities to promote college-industry partnerships. The participation of private sector partners is essential to apply for this fund.
It is co-funded with the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s College-Industry Innovation Fund.
Application dates for this fund are not yet announced.
The institutions that can apply to this program are:
- Universities and colleges
- Research hospitals
- Not-for-profit research institutes
As this program is co-funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the amount of the grant comes from the Ontario government and the Canada Foundation for Innovation. Each party will contribute up to 40% of the total eligible costs. The remaining 20% can come from either the research institution or private sector partners.
